“Dark, original, unsettling” – a historical novel set in Puritan England in the 17th century

Tate South Lambeth’s next reading group session is on Thursday June 9th  at 6.30 to 8pm, in the garden – if the weather is fine.

The group will  be discussing is The Manningtree Witches by A K Blakemore, which was shortlisted for the Costa book awards in 2021 and won the Desmond Elliott Prize.

This novel looks at an episode in 1643 in the small town of Manningtree where as many as 300 women are thought to have been accused of witchcraft. It shows how easily the desire to cast blame when times are hard  leads people to turn on the poor and the marginal. A story relevant to the present day.
