An evening of fado

Fado 2

Wednesday, 10th September, 7pm (doors open 6.30pm)

A talk about the history of fado, with a live performance, sponsored by the Instituto Camões

Fado is a performance genre unique to Portugal. It developed in Lisbon in the early 19th century, as a multicultural synthesis of Afro-Brazilian song and local musical traditions. This event will help you understand and appreciate this Portuguese cultural heritage.

Admission free. Booking is essential as places are limited. To reserve a place, email friendsoftsl@hotmail.com or contact the library at 0207 926 0705.

This event forms part of the Lambeth Heritage Festival. For the full programme go to www.lambeth.gov.uk/heritagefestival

I arrived very late for your lovely programme on Fado on 10th September, after guiding to Winchester from a cruise ship in Southampton. I thought there was to be another such event this Saturday at 8pm, but I cannot find anything about it online. Could you please let me know, as I have booked for a conference at Conway Hall that day, followed by a talk about the dreadful situation in Palestine – Gaza in Islinghton.

I have invited a friend, so do need the details to be correct. Is food available at the library or is there a nice Portuguese restaurant nearby? Charmian

Sorry – there’s no such event this Saturday, although we would like to have another fado evening in the future. Re food – the events at the library do not normally offer any food. But there are numerous lively Portuguese restuarants just across the road from the library.
